Papers of the Hume, Skinker, and Digges families [manuscript], ca.1788-1927.

The first series of the collection includes correspondence, both business and personal, of the Hume, Skinker, and Digges families, 1810-1927, and a few business papers of the Skinker and Digges family. The second series includes business receipts, accounts, bills, and contracts of the Hume family, 1788-1900, and business ledgers and account books of the Hume family and Bartenstein families, 1812-1910; also including a cookbook in one of the business ledgers. Notable is a contract with John Marshall. The third series of miscellany includes church materials from New Church and Wesley Chapel, a hymn book dated 1831, and miscellaneous poems and prayers; miscellaneous poetry of Mary Digges, biography of Edward Digges with miscellaneous poems and prayers; school notebooks of Fred Bartenstein, and receipts (cuisine), presidential election tickets, confederate money, photographs, a "Soldier's Almanac," diplomas, and a picture of Mosby's Raiders dated 1898.

John Marshall (1755-1835) was born near Germantown, Prince William (currently Fauquier) County, Virginia on 24 September 1755 to parents Thomas Marshall and Mary Randolph Keith. From 1775-1781, Marshall served in the Continental Army and fought in the Revolutionary War. During the spring and summer of 1780, Marshall attended classes at the College of William and Mary and received his license to practice law. John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916) of Powhatan County, Va., was a lawyer and Confederate officer. Mosby was educated at the University of Virginia and worked as a lawyer in Washington County, Va., prior to the Civil War. In 1861, Mosby enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry.
